Canoe Northern Minnesota
This 3-4 hour self-guided canoe expedition, is for adventurous types looking for a physical challenge. This section of the forest is lush with wildlife. Portaging over multiple beaver dams will be required. If you enjoy the forest and water, this is for you.
Your canoe, paddles and life jackets are provided. You are shuttled to the start point on the creek and you paddle back to your vehicle.
Shuttle Pick-Up Location:
North Country Trail - CR-50 Trailhead
Your group will be shuttled to the launch site on the Howard Lake Road. You’ll paddle back downstream to your vehicle. This is a self-guided adventure.

What is provided?

Rain Gear (depending on weather)
Shoes that can get wet, you WILL walk in the water

Paddle Distance:
Paddling distance from the launch site (Howard Lake Road) to pick-up location (County Road 50) is 4.5 miles.
This paddle can take as long as 3-5 hours to complete.
Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult
The slow current can be deceptive; paddling requires experience.
Hazards: Watch for submerged logs and rocks, which can change with water levels.
Obstacles: Low-hanging trees and shoreline vegetation require careful navigation.
Portages: Expect several short portages to bypass multiple beaver dams.
What’s the route?
You will paddle a section of the creek between Akeley and Walker, Minnesota. The creek runs through an uninhabited forest parallel to the Heartland Trail (Shingobee Connection Trail) and the North County Trail.
